- Shirley Irene Kinghorn, 91, of Milbridge, Maine, went to be with her Lord Monday evening, June 5, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 23, 1925 to Horace M. and Alice R. (Barteaux) Hall in Calais, Maine.
On July 18, 1942, she married the love of her life, Garfield L. Kinghorn who predeceased her on Oct. 27, 1986. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She accomplished much in her life and the greatest was the day she found Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Her life was dedicated to living by the Word of God and it was her foundation as matriarch of her family. She committed her life to ensuring her family knew the Lord and prayed daily for each one by name. She was instrumental in founding the Church of the Nazarene in Milbridge by opening her living room to services. She was an excellent baker/cook and will be remembered by many for her yeast rolls, donuts, and much more. Many will remember the "Little is Much" food stand she and Garfield ran for many summers.
Shirley is survived by her step-daughter Joyce Cirone of Orland, and her children Carroll Kinghorn and wife Mackie of Milbridge, Marion Pinkham and husband Rodney of Hancock, Sandra Young and husband Paul of Gouldsboro, Stephen Kinghorn and wife Adeline of Steuben, Stephenie Strout and husband Joe of Harrington, Terry Backman and husband Ralph of Beals Island, Evelyn Kinghorn of Ellsworth, Bettye Colby of Milbridge, John Kinghorn and Karen of Warren, her niece Sue Hewett, as well as 28 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, more than 21 great-great-grandchildren and numerous special family friends.
In addition to her husband, Shirley was predeceased by her sister Bette Hewett, nephew, Dennis Melvin, grandson John Lawrence, great-granddaughter Morgan Elizabeth Colby, and step-daughters Marie Ingersoll and Charlene Ramsey.
Although all her grandchildren were special to her, we would like to express our deepest and heartfelt appreciation to Dennis Kinghorn for his love and dedication to his "Gram". As just a little boy he knew he always wanted to take care of her. This continued through the remainder of her life and made it possible for Gram to spend most of her days in her beloved home. Along with Denny, his loving daughter Michaela also had special bond with Gram. She called Michaela, "Michaela Leigh over the Sea." How true this became, as Michaela is currently attending Leuven University in Belgium. She made it a point be with Gram every Christmas of her life.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to her youngest daughter Bettye Colby for her many years of care, her granddaughter Meagan Watts for the countless hours reading her grandmother Christian novels, Rev. and Mrs. John Bosley and family, and the numerous family members and nurses that cared for her.
Funeral services with be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday June 11, 2017 at the Milbridge Elementary School Gymnasium.
