Shirley's Story

NORTH ANSON - Shirley Barbara Lovejoy Goodwin, 94, died peacefully on Saturday, January 9, 2016 in Marietta, Georgia, in the loving care of her daughter Dorcas Goodwin Wilkinson and son-in-law Spencer Winn Wilkinson. She was a Christmas baby, born December 25, 1921 in Lincoln, Maine, the daughter of Sonie Mallett Hamilton Lovejoy and Howard Asa Lovejoy.

She was raised on the family farm in nearby Chester, Maine. As was necessitated by the times, her father took work away from the farm for extended periods. Her mother and grandmother, Eliza Hamilton, ran the farm and she was greatly influenced by their strength, perseverance, and work ethic.

In 1935, her parents sold the farm and moved the family to North Anson, Maine. There she met the love of her life, Carroll C. Goodwin, Jr. Following his service in World War II, they were married, November 16, 1945, in North Anson and where they lived together, actively involved in community, school, and church organizations, until Carroll's death October 16, 1997.

Mrs. Goodwin graduated from Anson Academy in 1939. Too young to enter nursing school, she attended Farmington Normal School, now the University of Maine, Farmington, for one year, before enrolling in the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Maine, where she earned her R. N. degree in 1944.

She was a loving wife and mother, an active community volunteer, and a devoted friend to many. Her strength and wisdom left an indelible mark on those who came to know her well.

She is survived by her daughter, Dorcas, and son-in-law, Spencer of Marietta, Georgia; her grandson Spencer W. Wilkinson, Jr. of Manassas, Virginia; her sister-in-law Muriel Spring Lovejoy of Portland, Maine; her nieces, Barbara Lovejoy Dyer of Saco, Maine, and Rebecca Lovejoy Kees, of Lakeland, Florida; and several great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Willis Hamilton Lovejoy.

A celebration of life and interment will be held in North Anson, Maine, in spring 2016, on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Stewart Public Library, PO Box 177, North Anson, Maine 04958. Arrangements by Giberson Funeral Home, Madison, ME.
