Sherman was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on August 23, 1928, to Sherman and Clara (Fletcher) Johnston. The family moved back to Mars Hill shortly after Sherman was born. Growing up in Aroostook County with his brothers and sisters he learned the value of hard work and a strong work ethic that would serve him well throughout his life.
He later moved to Madison to help out on the farm for his Aunt Annie and Uncle C.K. Wheeler, because their son Murray had gone off to serve in WWII. Soon after Sherman would also be called upon to serve his country. He joined the Marines in 1951 and served in the Korean War. After his enlistment was up he joined the Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. He returned in 1971 after 20 years of service. He stayed with Clifford and Queenie Clark and helped them as he could. He then finally found his spot on the hill in Embden in 1980 overlooking the Kennebec River.
