- Sheldon W. Ryder, 86, died on July 7, 2017, at home surrounded by his family. He was born November 18, 1930 in Newburgh, the son of Ira Parker and Beatrice (Hamlin) Ryder.
Sheldon served in the Marine Corp during the Korean War. He spent most of his life as a part time farmer which reflected his love for animals. His work life started with the railroad, progressed to various roles in construction (building I-95) and later as manager of the Hampden Public Works Department for 23 years.
Sheldon married Hazel Spencer in 1953 and settled in Hampden, Maine. They celebrated 63 years of marriage. He served in the church in various leadership positions. He loved the Lord, his family, his church and the church family. He was a member of the Bangor Crosspoint Church, where he had dear friends who very lovingly helped him during his last few months of life. For the past 17 years they have been snowbirds in Zephyrhills, Florida, where they have enjoyed many good friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers: Erwin and Cedric and a half-sister: Sandra. Surviving in addition to his wife Hazel are his son, David Ryder and his wife Melissa of Hampden. His four daughters: Wanda Whittet and her husband, Hal of Gainesville, Florida; Sheila Bartlett of Hampden, Maine; Julie Kelly and her husband Sean of Friendswood, Texas; Theresa Whiting and her husband Shane of Holden, Maine. Eleven grandchildren: Philip Blake of Quincy, MA; Bethany and her husband Lee Miller of Hampden; Amy and her husband Kellen Hutchins of Hampden; Shelley and her husband Joshua Sargent of Hampden; Hank Bartlett of Hampden; Austin Kelly of Friendswood, TX; Megan Kelly of Friendswood, TX; Nathan White of Holden; Adam White of Holden; Logan Palmer of Hampden and Trevor Palmer of Hampden. Nine great-grandchildren: Michael Sargent, Isaac Sargent, Danielle Sargent, Gabrielle Sargent, Brody Miller, Brayden Miller, Van Hutchins, Mikayla White and Abby Palmer.
Services honoring Sheldon and celebrating his life will be held at Crosspoint Church, 1476 Broadway, Bangor, at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2017, with a time of refreshment and fellowship to follow.
He will surely be missed by many. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations are made to The Shepherd's Godparent Home, PO B0X 616, Bangor, ME 04402-0616. A life gone and a life saved.
