- Sheila Ellen (O'Brien) McIver died April 26, 2017, at age 83.
She was born on Veteran's Day, 1933 daughter of Clarence Patrick O'Brien and Margarite (McCarthy) O'Brien in Bangor, Maine. She was a cheerleader at Bangor High School. She was raised by her father and grandmother, Edna McCarthy, and two older brothers, Richard and Eugene O'Brien.
Sheila spent most of her childhood and teenage summers on the waters and shores of Moosehead Lake and attended Camp Natarswi, where she learned to canoe and often climbed Mount Katahdin.
Sometime in 1950, she met James Evander McIver of Greenville, Maine, in the Indian Store. It was love at first sight. They married and had two sons, Jamie Jr. and Richard, and a daughter, Laurianne. They were married for 53 years until Jimmy died in 2004. She never got over it, but trudged on like the super trooper she was.
Over the course of years, she worked as a secretary for I.B.M., and was a meat wrapper for Shaw's and First National Stores. Then she became a clothing sales clerk for Goodnows of Keene and Filene's of Portland, Maine, which she was a natural at, as she had excellent taste in clothing and color coordinates.
She later owned and operated Wind Swept Bed and Breakfast of Greenville with her husband, James. Sheila was an excellent cook and had enough class to socialize with Eleanor Roosevelt, Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, or any of the first ladies of this country.
She was an active member of the Red Hat Ladies and Union Evangelical Church of Greenville, Maine.
She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James; two brothers, Richard O'Brien and Rhode Island and Eugene O'Brien of California; also her father and mother-in-law, William and Florence McIver of Greenville, Maine. She lost her son, Jamie McIver, on Thanksgiving Day, 1959. He was seven years old.
