Ruth's Story

ST PETERSBURG, FLORIDA - Ruth Margaret Estes Meller (88) of St Petersburg, Florida, passed away on November 13, 2014, at Bon Secours Maria Manor after a period of declining health. Ruth was born in Medway, Massachusetts, on June 20, 1926, the third daughter of David and Mary (Jones) Estes. After Ruth graduated from North Anson Academy in Maine, she moved to New York City and became a model. It was there that she met the love of her life, Igor Meller. Together they ran Bari Dance Studio in Detroit, Michigan, for 15 years. She loved to dance and, in her later years, waltzed to the Blue Danube as part of her daily exercise routine. After leaving Detroit, Ruth and Igor returned to New York City where Ruth managed Saks Fifth Avenue's Eveningwear Department with great success. Ruth always maintained a sense of style and taste that was loved and admired by her family. They moved to Florida in 1972 and soon settled in St. Petersburg where she continued growing and learning, obtaining her GIA diamond certification while working for Jewelmasters and Robinson's. Ruth and Igor loved living in St. Petersburg: enjoying the beach and the city, spending time with their friends, and hosting visits from their family in the North trying to thaw out. She had an air of grace and kindness, and she showered great love on her nieces and nephews. She greatly appreciated all of her caretakers in her convalescence, and they, in turn, enjoyed her as well. She was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Igor Meller. She was also predeceased by her parents and three sisters: Marcia Davis, June Morton Towne, and Lois Stowell. She is survived by her nieces, Judith Davis Bragdon and Jane Davis Libby; nephews, Darrold Morton and Brett Davis; her dear friend and neighbor, Juanita Dvorascek; and many great nieces and nephews. Interment will be in Maine at South Bowdoin Cemetery in the Spring.
