Ruth's Story

BANGOR AND AUGUSTA - Ruth Helen Dyer, 97, went to be with her Lord September 27, 2015. She was born April 20, 1918, in Portland, the daughter of Joseph C. and Ruth (Duncan) McKay.

Ruth attended schools in Portland, Maine. After graduation she was employed as a clerk at a Post Office in Portland. She married Robert T. Dyer in 1942 and devoted her life to her beloved husband, children, grandchildren, and church. Ruth was the first education tech in the State of Maine. It was a school for special needs students in Auburn. She was a gift to every student she encountered. Her love of children radiated from her throughout her long life. She hosted many children's evangelist bible studies, worked as a cook at Camp Fairhaven Christian Camps and taught Sunday school. She always placed special needs children first. Her grandchildren and children at Caswell Street in Augusta will testify to that. Ruth believed the most precious gift to give children is time. She modeled how to play and appreciate God's creations. She always had time for a game, talk, laugh, or activity with children. Ruth was a member of the Hope Baptist Church in Manchester. She modeled her Christian faith by walking in faith with compassion and providing encouragement to those that surrounded her. Ruth enjoyed life and was the sparkle of many social gatherings. As an optimist, she had a smile for everyone and a quick sense of humor. She will always be remembered for her engaging spirit and concern for others. Her family wishes to thank the staff at the Country Villa in Bangor who cared for her the last 5 years of her life as an extended member of their family.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her husband Robert T. Dyer, a son Bob Dyer, and a great granddaughter Jenovieve Pangburn.
