- Ruby F. Hanson, 89, passed away from complications of pneumonia on December 26, 2016. Despite her strength-of-will to resist and the support of her loving family at her bedside, the sudden and forceful impact of the illness carried her soul peacefully into the heavens the day after Christmas.
Born on July 25, 1927, to Albert and Lucy (Robinson) Higgins of Albion, ME, and devoted and loving wife of 67 years to the late Edgar F. "Mutt" Hanson, Jr., (World War II Veteran and long-time professional in Maine's forest products industry), Ruby was well known in the surrounding communities for her culinary expertise and her volunteer outreach to the community through the Howland Methodist Church. Specializing as a Pastry Chef spanning more than half a century, she created over 1000 wedding, birthday, and anniversary cakes so delicious and so beautiful that betroths-to-be were calling from the far corners of the State to insist she create the perfect wedding cake for their perfect day. In 1980, Ruby was hand selected by senior management of St. Regis Lumber Company to be Lead Chef and Hostess at Mopang Lodge, the company's national retreat for business affairs located on the scenic shores of Mopang Lake. Brought from humble beginnings, Ruby was the epitome of humility, selflessness, dignity, strength of character, and class. She gave everything while asking for nothing and always maintained a titanic sense of optimism even when the de-habilitating effects of a chronic respiratory illness were at their fiercest. Ruby was predeceased by numerous family members and will be sadly missed by the many who have survived her.
Graveside services will be officiated by Pastor Bruce Young at the West Enfield Cemetery on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 1 p.m. Charitable donations to the Maine State Humane Society or the Howland Methodist Church are requested in lieu of flowers. Online condolences may be expressed at clayfuneralhome.com.
