HUNTSVILLE, AL - Roy L. "Bud" Henderson, 89, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday after a long period of failing health. He was born in Blue Hill, Maine, son of Roy L. Henderson, Sr. and Mary Leighton Henderson. He was an alumnus of George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill and of Athens College, Alabama.
Mr. Henderson had a 30-year active military career serving both in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army (Sgt. Major, Ret.). His military career included both World War II (including action in Normandy, France, North Africa, Sicily and Italy) and the Korea Conflict. Other active duty assignments included posts in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and several U.S. posts.
He was an active sports enthusiast which included successful participation in basketball and baseball. He was a semi-pro pitcher in New England and Canada during the late 1940's. He was offered an opportunity to pitch for the Philadelphia Athletics.
Roy had lived in Huntsville since 1965. He was an active member of First Baptist Church and served as a Deacon for a number of years and was active in choir.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rena Pelletier Henderson in 2008 of Presque Isle, Maine, and his sister, Priscilla Hartford Ryan of Houlton, Maine.
Survivors include son, Bruce Henderson (Gail) of Milledgeville, GA; daughter, Susan Shaw Craddock of Huntsville; grandchildren, Courtney Craddock Armstrong (Patrick), Matthew D. Craddock, Rachael L. Henderson (Michael), Donna Craddock Zittrouer (Sam), and Angela Craddock DeHart (Gary); and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Monday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. (www.laughlinservice.com)
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Huntsville or George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, Maine.
