Roy's Story

HOLDEN - Roy A. Crawford, 96, husband of the late Mabel (Henry) Crawford, died June 21, 2014 at a Bangor health care center. He was born Nov. 2, 1917 in Bangor, the son of Alzono and Effie Crawford.

Roy was drafted by the US Army and redrafted by the US Navy during WWII serving with the Navy for a brief period of time. He eventually earned his high school diploma through correspondence courses. Roy had a paper route when he was a child delivering the Bangor Daily News during the 1920's. He worked as a sheet metal worker for many years for Acme Supply Co, later for Glaster & Springer and also worked for himself out of his home. He was a member of the Pine Grove Grange, Brewer and a member of the National Grange and he volunteered for the Soap Box Derby from 1951 to 1956. Roy enjoyed hunting and fishing and watching harness racing, loved his flowers beds and loved to garden. He also liked to watch baseball games on television.

He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years; his parents, four sisters, Ruby Smith, Faye Smith, Violet Curtis and Marjorie Clark and by one brother, Douglas Crawford. Surviving are four children, LeRoy Crawford and his wife, Mary Ellen of Lancaster, PA, Richard Crawford of Holden, Linda Martin of Longview, TX and Karen Ryan and her husband, John of Brewer; a very close family friend, Grady Stevenson of Holden; eight grandchildren, Rhonda Beane and her husband, Dan, Bruce Crawford, Mark Crawford and his companion, Brenda, Deborah Cowart and her husband, Robert, Denise Evans and her husband, Jay, Amy Luce and her husband, Fred, Andrew Crawford and his wife, Kim and Amanda Ryan; 14 great grandchildren, Kyle, Karleigh, Karson, Kelsey, Colin, Kassie, Matthew, Nicholas, Brett, Allison, Kailey, Molly, Hayden and Morgan; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Roy's family gratefully thanks the staff of the Sylvia Ross Home and Ross Manor for the excellent care they received in the past weeks and years.

Family and friends may visit 6-8 pm Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor where a service honoring Roy's life will be held 1 PM Thursday, June 26, 2014 with Pastor Harbour Mitchell, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Brewer, presiding.
