BANGOR - Rosalyn (Decker) Mitchell died peacefully Dec. 9, 2015, after a valiant and not so peaceful battle with Alzheimer's. She was held by one of her daughters as she passed with her other six children a heartbeat away. Rosie was born April 13, 1932, to Nicholas and Mary (Kanz) Decker in Saint Charles, MN and fell in love with Gerald (Jerry) Mitchell in Watertown, SD.
At age 16, Jerry wrote, "Today I Met the Girl I Am Going to Marry". These sweethearts wed in Fort Richardson, Alaska where they started a family which grew to include seven children; Linda Mitchell-Storer (and spouse Tollef Storer), Rhonda Hess (and friend Charlie Sargent), Cheryl Mitchell (and spouse Chris Larson), Glenn Mitchell (and spouse Denise), Susan Nasberg (and spouse David), Don Mitchell (and spouse Laura) and Mike Mitchell (and spouse Kathy). They lived next in the Midwest, and later in Maryland and Maine.
They loved dancing, socializing with friends, marksmanship and bowling and were delighted by and so proud of their children. Rosie was a brave Army wife, supporting Jerry through two tours in Vietnam while she continued to raise their seven children. When Jerry died at age 39, after planning to move back to South Dakota to be near relatives, she chose to take the challenging path and remain in Bangor, ME, giving her children and grandchildren four decades of security, stability and tremendous love. Rosie Posie (as her brother Ray called her) was a dear, generous friend. She took delight in crafts, decorating, following local and professional basketball, crossword puzzles, reading and gift giving. Her Christmases were unparalleled with mountains of presents and beautiful hand crafted decorations to delight all.
Rosie was blessed with fifteen grandchildren; Aaron, Amelia, Emily, Jerry, Julia, Andy, Steve, Eli, Brianna, Gabrielle, Samantha, Nina, Will, Jerry and Emma; three step-grandchildren, Miranda, Ingri and Alexis - and six great-grandchildren, Kristina, Daniel, Maci, Gavin, Carter and Olivia. In addition to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is survived by her brother, Richard Decker of San Diego, CA, as well as a throng of other sweet Mitchells and Deckers. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Ralph Decker of Watertown, SD and Raymond Decker of Richardson, TX.
The family will hold a gathering of remembrance on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 1:00 pm at 68 Hempstead Avenue, Bangor. Burial will take place in Watertown, SD in July 2016, a place of love and family history, where she will be laid to rest with her husband. So easy to love and so loving, Rosie will be missed by all those whose lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, tribute donations to Alzheimer's research through the Alzheimer's Association (http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_tributes.asp) will be deeply appreciated.
