- Roger B. Frey, 83, of Hampden, Maine passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born August 12, 1933 in Bath, Maine to John H. and Esther (Pray) Frey.
Roger served in the U.S. Army as a Scientific & Professional Mathematician-Statistician developing new technology for experimental field combat exercises. He attended the University of Maine at Orono and the University of Maryland, obtaining his BA in Mathematics, MA in Psychology and Ph.D. in Psychology. He went on to dedicate the next 50 years to teaching psychology, research and statistics at the University of Maine system, holding various positions throughout the psychology department and the College of Arts and Sciences. His love of teaching was well known by students and faculty alike and his willingness to help his students achieve their academic goals was apparent. Outside of teaching, his next love was his farm in Hampden where he built his house and barn from the ground up. During the summers you could find him haying the fields, planting his gardens and tinkering on the old tractors around the farm. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and was an excellent cook. He was known for hosting holiday parties and family dinners, often bringing home graduate students to ensure that if they couldn't be with their families that they would have a home cooked meal with his. Roger was always quick to lend a helping hand and volunteered his building skills for the Eastern Agency on Aging and for other local projects. Most of all he loved to tell stories, about his time in the army or as a research assistant working with chimpanzees, his theater skills for stage make up and prop building or the pranks he continuously played on his sisters. His dry humor, easy smile and desire to help others will be greatly missed.
Roger is survived by his sisters, Patricia Hendrickson and husband, Howard, of Wiscasset, Nancy Painton of Damariscotta, Judy Frey of Brunswick and Dorene Gearheart and husband, Fred, of Pittston; his children, Gail Frey of Connecticut, Wendy Molen and husband, Howard, of New Jersey, Roger Frey Jr. of Florida, Robyn Fransen and husband, Erik, of Hampden and James Lolar and wife, Sarah, of Old Town; his grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Maranda Schachter of New Jersey, Elizabeth and Austin Frey of Florida, Caleb Moody and Isabelle Fransen of Hampden and Avery and Rowan Lolar of Old Town. Roger is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends who will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents, John H. Frey and Esther Frey Herrick, his stepfather, Rev.
