Ashland and Masardis
- Rodney P. Chalou, 74, passed away peacefully February 27, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at the Maine Veterans Home, Caribou. He was born December 9, 1942, in Presque Isle, a son of the late Alphonse and Evangeline (Tardie) Chalou, and was raised in Ashland with many happy times and beautiful memories of his childhood.
After graduating from high school, Rod lived and worked in Connecticut, where he enlisted with the US Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam as a radio operator. He was a very proud Marine and often shared stories being stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. He worked almost 30 years with Maine DOT, based in Ashland, retiring in 2005. Rod especially enjoyed visiting special friends Rose and Randy Chambers, sitting around the campfire talking and eating Rose's chili, and going to breakfast at Vaughn and Donna Higgins' camp. He loved riding in the woods during the fall.
Rodney is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Sylvia (Stevens) Chalou of Mapleton, formally of Masardis; three sons, Troy Chalou and his wife Larissa of No. Waterboro, Rick Stevens and Terry Chalou and his wife Amanda, all of Presque Isle; four precious grandchildren, Olivia "Munchkin", Keith "Bub", Jaimie and Britney; four siblings, Donna Regan and her husband Mike of Ellington, CT, Neil Chalou of Ashland, Terry Chalou and his wife Barbara of Brunswick, and Doug Chalou of Windsor, CT; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Rod is predeceased by a sister, Susan Chalou, and a grandson, Dylan McCarthy.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9699, 36 Portage Rd., Ashland.
