Roberta's Story

CORINTH AND DOVER-FOXCROFT - Roberta (Curran) Sawyer, age 91, wife of late C. Eastman Sawyer, died peacefully on August 15, 2015, at Hibbard Skilled Nursing. Roberta was born in Brewer, Maine, on June 21, 1924, daughter of Daniel Thomas Curran and Stella (Barstow) Curran.

Roberta graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1941, and Beal Business College. Roberta was very active. She was the daughter of a carpenter and a good one herself, building the family camp at Pushaw Pond and the barns that sit on the Sawyer family farm in Corinth. She loved sports, especially women's basketball.  She played for Bangor High, and she coached girls' basketball in Corinth. She was an avid and talented golfer, both in Maine and Florida. Roberta and Eastman spent thirty winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, and made many friends there. Roberta enjoyed working as office manager in several businesses, particularly in the insurance industry. She also helped farmers in Corinth with complicated income tax returns. Roberta served on many boards, including as treasurer for the Food Co-op in Dover-Foxcroft, treasurer of the governing body of her Florida community of Bet Mar, and school board for MSAD #64.

Surviving are her daughter, Janet Sawyer and husband, Dwain Allen; son, Thomas and wife, Angel, of Corinth; grandchildren, Michelle Sawyer-Houle and husband, Patrick, of Johnson, Vermont, John Sawyer of Gardiner, Maine, and Matthew Sawyer of Corinth; great-grandsons, Desmond Sawyer-Houle and Hollis Sawyer-Houle; and sister, Barbara Davis of Brewer, Maine.

Everyone is invited to join the family at Corinth United Methodist Church from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, for a time of telling stories and remembrance. A private service and burial will be held at a later date. The family wish to thank everyone at Hibbard Skilled Nursing, Pine Tree Hospice  and Roberta's dear friend, Rita Corbin, for their care and compassion. Those who wish may make donations to Corinth United Methodist Church, 275 Main St., Corinth, ME 04427. Cremation arrangements are in care of Thompson Funeral Home, Corinth.
