Robert's Story

NEWPORT - Robert Ross Palmer, 70, went to be with the Lord June 25, 2014, at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born May 18, 1944, in Bangor, a son of Ross and Mary (Rodgerson) Palmer.

He graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1962, and starting in 1963, made a career of the Navy. He had 3 tours of duty in Vietnam, retiring in 1983. He then was employed by Penobscot County as a cook/dietician for the county jail in August 1983. Under Sheriff Reynolds, Robert received a cook of the year award and retired in May 1996.He was an active member of the Newport Church of God.

Robert married the former Margaret O'Brien on March 7, 1969, and had 3 children, Jan, Jayson and James. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Isabel, Kevin, Jeremy and Jayson. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Jayson on July 12, 1976.

He loved a friend that never left his side, loved him, comforted him, cried with him, laughed with him and sat on him, his dog, Gideon.

Services will be held 11 A.M. Thursday, July 3rd, at Crosby & Neal, Newport, with the Rev. Buddy Gough officiating. Burial will be in the Palmyra Village Cemetery.
