PALM HARBOR, FL AND ELLSWORTH ME - Robert Bernard McAteer, 77, of Palm Harbor, FL and Ellsworth, ME, died peacefully, at home with his family, on the morning of August 7, 2014. Bob was born in New York, NY.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; his children Mary (Tim) Clulo, Marjorie McAteer, and Colin McAteer; his step-children Jules Stewart and Heather (Caitlin Featherstone) Stewart; his sister Kathleen (Michael) Sheehan; his brother Russell (Jeannie) McAteer; his grandchildren Ryan, Kathryn, Lauren, Sean, and Ruby; and his first wife, Margaret McAteer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kevin McAteer.
Bob was a novice of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in New York. He received his undergraduate degree at Catholic University of America and his Master's Degree from St. John's University, NY. Bob taught foreign languages in the Uniondale School District, on Long Island, NY. He was a president and negotiator for the Uniondale Teachers' Union and a past president of the Long Island Macintosh Users Group.
Bob was a contemplative, a scholar and teacher throughout his life. He was a gentle man, a loving husband, father, and friend, and a joy to be with. His love for his Church and his Catholic faith lead him to support those whom he considered the disenfranchised. In Maine, he was a local Catholic voice for Marriage Equality Maine and supported the Religious Coalition Against Discrimination. He was a past president of and spokesperson for Voice of the Faithful, Maine.
Bob was delighted by and involved with his grandchildren, teaching them woodworking, gardening, appreciation of nature and a love of books.
A Liturgy of the Word to celebrate and remember Bob will be held on Saturday, September 6, at 2:30 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellsworth, Maine, with Rev. John Skehan presiding. Friends are invited to attend.
