MACHIAS - Robert "Bob/Bobby" Layne Mallar, 54, passed away Saturday May 21, 2016 in Machias. Bob was born to Donald Mallar and Helen M. Gooch on June 5, 1961 in Machias Maine.
Bob was a 1979 graduate of Machias Memorial High School and went on to earn a BS in Communications a followed by a Masters in Science at Indiana State University in Public Relations in 1985. Bob worked at the local A&P store in Machias, eventually becoming manager. He refereed soccer in Washington County for several years. Bob was an avid outdoorsman and became a whitewater raft guide for North Country Rivers from 1996-2012. He guided on various rivers in Maine as well as the Gauley River in West Virginia. He also worked at Sugarloaf Mountain from 1996-2008 during the winter months as a "Vertical Transport Engineer." Most recently Bob was employed by the Department of Conservation Bureau of Parks and Lands.
Bob was a Patriots fan and had a great love for the Indy 500 and attended it for 25 years.
Bob was predeceased by his father, Donald Mallar, November 8, 2012.
He is survived by his mother, Helen M. Gooch of Machias; his brothers, Roland (Polie) Mallar of Pinehurst, North Carolina, Richard Mallar of Orlando, Florida, John Gooch of Manchester, New Hampshire and Michael Gooch and his wife Dawn of Whiting, Maine.
Bob is also survived by his nephews, Jason Mallar and his wife Danielle, Joseph Gooch, Breckin Gooch; and great nephews, Julian and Riley Mallar.
Graveside services will be held 1 pmThursday, May 26, 2016 at at the Jacksonville Cemetery, East Machias, Maine.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob's name to one of his favorite organizations the World Wildlife Fund or a charity of one's choice in Bob's name.
