Robert's Story

WALLINGFORD, CT - Robert Joseph Lawler, 90, of Wallingford, loving husband of 69 years of Maxine Porter Lawler, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden, CT., surrounded by his family, after a long illness. Bob was born in Afton, N.Y., July 27, 1924, a son of the late Maurice R. Lawler and Ellen R. Reilly Lawler.

Bob joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served during World War II. He was a door gunner and was present on the day Dachau Concentration Camp was liberated. He later returned home to Patten, Maine and earned a degree in mechanics through the G.I. Bill. Bob and his brother owned and operated a garage in Patten, ME, until moving to Meriden, CT. in 1960 when he was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. Bob retired in 1989 as a heavy equipment operator. Bob earned his pilot's license and flew as a commercial and recreational pilot. He enjoyed watching the Yankees, listening to country western music, planting his garden, playing cards, golfing, bowling and travelling.

In addition to his wife, Maxine, he is survived by his daughter, Irene (Nick) Azzolina of Meriden; his son, Martin (Teri) Lawler of Florida; his grandchildren, Marty (Kristen) Azzolina, Mark Azzolina, Martin Lawler Jr., Tait (Jamie) Lawler, Ryan Lawler, Cierra (Brian) Jones, and Alyse and Nicole Lawler; his great-grandchildren, Emily, Kelly and Alex Azzolina, Samantha Stone, Angelica Lawler, Noah and Lucas Lawler, Aiden, Mason, and Nathan Jones; his great-great-grandson, Connor Alderman; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his 5 brothers; and 4 sisters.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Yalesville Funeral Home, 386 Main St., 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014. A funeral service will be held in The Yalesville Funeral Home, 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3. Interment with military honors will be in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown, CT.
