ELLSWORTH - Robert Leo Garland, Sr., 89, died January 03, 2015 at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Ellsworth, March 06, 1925, the son of Frederick R. and Suzanne G. (Doiran) Garland.
Bob enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and served during WWII as a Seaman 1st Class aboard the USS Iowa BB-61. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended three years of barber school under the GI bill and opened his own shop, the Esquire Barber Shop in Hartford, CT. In 1948, he married Mary Patriss Garland and they raised five children. In the early 70's, he worked as a maintenance worker for the VA Hospital in Newington, CT. Bob was an organic gardener and was noted for his natural eye in landscaping, most notably stone walls. His biggest personal accomplishment was an A-frame house he started in the 1960's and was completed enough to live in permanently when he moved to Maine in 1990. He was a loving father and was full of fun and adventure.
He is survived by his daughters, JoAnn Eaton of Bangor, Patti A. Garland and husband Bill Litwin of New Milford, CT, Maryann Allen and husband Donald S. of Ellsworth; sons, Robert L. Garland, Jr., and wife Betsy of Ellsworth, and Christopher J. Garland and wife Susan of Glastonbury, CT; grandchildren, Carl Eaton, Sara Allen, Gabriel and Charity Garland, Brandon and Caitlin Garland; brother, Paul Garland and wife Angie; sister, Shirley Szubinski; many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth.
