Robert's Story

BANGOR - Robert Bruce Cayford, 67, passed away May 7, 2016, at home, surrounded by loved ones. Bob was born Oct. 2, 1948, in Bangor, the son of Phillip J. Sr. and Dorothy (Stratten) Cayford.

Bobby graduated from Bangor High School, class of '68. He helped Bangor High start their first chess team. Shortly after, he joined the Bangor Fire Department, where he worked from 1972 until he retired in 1995. Afterward, Bob worked part time for the BDN. Bobby was well known around the area for playing softball. He hit more home runs than Babe Ruth! He received the nickname "Beauty." He traveled the U.S. playing for the Maine Maineiacs. Bob's favorite thing in the world was watching his son, Philip, play sports. He cheered loud and coached hard. Bob loved going swimming, collecting sports cards and coins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Phillip Jr. Surviving are his two sisters, Karen and Deanna. He was cared for by his daughter-in-law, Trina and his beloved son, Philip Robert Cayford.

Firefighters, teammates, family and friends are welcome to come to the Bangor Elks Club for a memorial benefit dinner from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, May 15. To anyone who can not attend, please send your donations to 22 South Park St., Bangor, ME 04401. Bob's ashes will be buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, plot 3211, later that week.
