Rita's Story

Van Buren - Rita Y. (Couturier) Thivierge, 75, died peacefully after a long illness on August 22, 2016 in a Scarborough hospice facility. She was born in Hamlin, Maine on March 25, 1941, the daughter of Joseph & Alphonsine (Levasseur) Couturier.


Rita was raised in Van Buren, Maine and educated in Van Buren schools. She met and married her husband, Harold, in 1965 and followed him around the country until he retired from the Army in 1975. During that time, she became a licensed cosmetologist/hairdresser, a trade that she practiced until 1988.


She is survived by her three sons, Jonathan, of Spartanburg, SC; Jayson, of Lyman, SC); and Jeffrey and his wife, Beth of Westbrook, ME; and one granddaughter, Makayla, of Westbrook. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold (Hal) Thivierge, and an infant sister, Joan.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Main St., Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family Monday morning 9:00-9:45 at the church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
