Rita's Story

CONCORD, N.H. - Rita Marie Hechler, 87, of Concord, NH, beloved wife of the late Roy Hechler and loving mother of Patricia, Susan, and Janet, passed away suddenly with her family by her side on Sunday, May 11, 2014. She was also the loving grandmother of Jennifer and Theodore Beruk of Dublin, OH, Caley and Christiane Lynch of Portsmouth, NH, and Elizabeth Haines of Portsmouth, NH.

Rita was born Rita Levesque in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada, May 18, 1926 to Alfred and Eva Levesque. She was the second oldest of nine children.

Bilingual in French and English, she graduated valedictorian of her English speaking Canadian class. She was married to her beloved Roy Hechler in 1947 in Grand Falls and they were married for 64 years. Rita and Roy raised their three daughters in Limestone and Concord, NH. An active member of the Catholic Church throughout her life, Rita was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and taught CCD at St. Louis Parish in Limestone. They enjoyed traveling to Myrtle Beach for winters for many years. Rita spent many years living with her husband in the Turtle Pond community in Concord where she enjoyed walks around the neighborhood, gardening, spending time with family, and attending Catholic mass.

In addition to her grandchildren, Rita is survived by her three daughters, Patricia Beruk (Jack), of Dublin, OH, Susan Hechler-Lynch (Jonathan Roberts), of Portsmouth, NH, Janet Haines (Mitchell Young), of Warner, NH, and her sisters, Claudette Godbout, Eva Strong, and Jeanne Masse. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by siblings, Jeannette Muro, Carmen O'Gorman, Freda Dube, Real Levesque and Camille Levesque.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 12 noon Friday, May 16, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 180 Loudon Road, Concord. Burial will be held at a later date at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to the NH Association for the Blind, 25 Walker St., Concord, NH 03301.
