Richard's Story

HICKORY, N.C. - Richard Joseph McDonald, 62, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Richard was born Sept. 5, 1951, in Bangor, to Robert V. McDonald and the late Rose Sementilli McDonald.

He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church where he served as Reader, Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, Usher, Catholic Scripture Study Leader, March for Life bus coordinator and leader for 20 plus years, Life Teen cook for one year, Initiator and coordinator for KofC. Friday fish fry during Lent, Knights of Columbus (past Grand Knight), American Society of Safety Engineers (Western Piedmont ASSE), past president of the National Fire Protection Association, American Fire Marshal Association, Boy Scouts of America as a troop leader, Cub Scouts of America as a den leader, both troop 351 at St. Aloysius. He was employed by Shurtape Technologies Inc. as a Safety Manager.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Elizabeth Caron McDonald of the home; daughter, Megan Marie Ziegler and husband, Adam, of Rock Island, Ill.; son, Michael Robert McDonald and wife, Katherine, of Granite Falls, N.C.; daughter, Molly Corinne Stacy and husband, Anderson, of Greensboro, N.C.; son, Matthew Paul McDonald and wife, Kristi, of Notre Dame, Ind.; daughter, Miriam Rose Brogan and husband, Riley, of Charlotte, N.C.; father, Robert Vincent McDonald of Bangor; sister, Ann McDonald Smith and husband, Brian, of Presque Isle; sister, Patti McDonald of Bangor; grandchildren, Joseph, Hannah, Eli, Miriam, Isaac, John, Nicholas Ziegler of Rock Island, Ill., Felix, Liam, Evelyn, Ruari McDonald of Granite Falls, N.C., Rosalyn and Esther McDonald of Notre Dame, Ind.; mother-in-law, Corrine "Connie" Charlotte Kelley Caron of Bangor; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stephen and Sabina Caron of Lexington, Mass.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kim and Donna Weiland of Merideth, N.H.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bob and Peggi Whitson of Oneida, Tenn.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Jeanne Caron of Winterport; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews whom he loved dearly.

The funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 27, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, with Father Bob Farris officiating. The wake will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday evening, at the church. Services and burial will be at a later date in Bangor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church Building Fund, Pregnancy Care Center (Hickory, N.C.), Rachel's Vineyard (a home for women who have had abortions), Catawba Regional Hospice (Newton, N.C.), Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation, Inc.
