BREWER - Richard "Dick" Giffard, husband of the late Barbara Wiles Giffard died on February 3rd, 2015 after a courageous battle with congestive Heart failure. He was the son of George and Virginia Giffard (Winchester).

Dick was a graduate of Brewer High School Class of 1950. He was a proud veteran of the US Army for 28 years. He rose to the rank of Sargent Major Infantry, and was a graduate of the US Army's 7th Army NCO Academy in Badtoltz, Germany in May of 1960. Overseas assignments included Germany twice, Korea once, and Vietnam twice. Stateside tours included Fort Devens, Massachusettes, Fort Dix New Jersey, Fort Rucker, Alabama, Fort Carson, Colorado, Woodbury, New Jersey and his last assignment was at the University of Maine ROTC Dept. He retired from the military in 1980. His decorations included Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with V device, Air medal, Army commendation medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense medal, four unit citations, the Combat Infantry Badge; and he was awarded the State of Maine Silver Star and Certificate of Appreciation. He married Barbara Wiles in 1951 and they were married for 56 years. During his military career, Barbara was very supportive, and together they adopted and raised two children, Gary and Shari. The four of them enjoyed life even though he was gone a lot leaving Barbara with a lot of decisions to make on her own. After his military career, Dick worked at Eastern Fine Paper as a trimmer operator until his retirement in 1993. Dick was active in the Maine Order of the Purple Heart as a member, and served as a past commander of the Joshua Chamberlain Chapter 1865. Dick also enjoyed volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House with Barbara, the veterans program at the Cole's Museum and as a Troop Greeter at the Bangor International Airport. Dick enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball, casinos, camping and trips to Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana among other things.

Dick was predeceased by his wife Barbara, Father George Giffard and Mother Virginia Giffard Winchester, Step Father Clarence Winchester, Sibling in laws Arthur Wiles II, Robert Wiles and his wife Marianne , Marjorie Brochu; and mother in law Marion Wiles, and Father in law Arthur Wiles. He is survived by his Children, Gary Giffard, Shari Keefe and Husband Calvin , grandchildren, Sarah and Ben Giffard, Michael Keefe, and Kendra Bruton and Husband William; two great grandchildren Micaiah and Eliezra Bruton; brother Wayne Giffard and wife Helen, Sidney Winchester and Wife Lillian, Sister in laws Lorraine Wiles and Glenda Wiles both of Baton Rouge La, Several nieces and nephews. Also mentioning his special friend, Judith Mitchell of Bangor who became his constant companion, and the Coffee Klatch at Tim Hortons and McDonalds in Brewer. Thanks to all of you.

Family and friends may visit 2 - 4 PM Friday, Feb. 6, 2015 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer where a service celebrating his life will be held at 4 PM as the visitation concludes. Burial with military honors will be at a later date at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Barbara will join him there and they will be together again. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice. In closing, Dick wishes you to understand "War is Hell and Freedom is Not Free"
