PRESQUE ISLE - Richard V. Ayre PhD, 67, passed away Thursday evening, June 19, 2014 at Spaulding Hospital in Cambridge, MA. He was born in Hammond, Indiana on August 21, 1946, the son of Robert S. and Barbara (Vaughn) Ayre.
Richard retired as a Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice from University of Maine at Presque Isle on August 31, 2009, having taught at UMPI since 1983. He taught his final course at UMPI just this past fall. He received his B.B.A. in Economics from the University of Miami in 1969, and his PhD in Sociology from the University of Colorado in 1979. Richard was an erudite, gentle, politically committed intellectual and social activist. He loved his family, friends, students and pets. He enjoyed all sports and was especially fond of riding his Harley.
Richard is survived by a sister Mary Ayre Oleary, brother-in-law Ron Brown, nephew Peter Brown, nieces Sara Ecclesine, Haruka Fenderson, Asuka Yoshii, Shizuka Nakashima and his five children- Tammie Michaud, Karen Bright, Richard, Brian, Gabriel Girard, as well as several grandchildren, grandnieces and nephews and many close loving friends and colleagues including Arthur and Barbara DeVaney of Presque Isle.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Margaret, his former wife Rachelle Dionne of Van Buren, and son Mathieu Girard.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday June 29, 2014 at the Presque Isle Congregational Church with Rev. Tim Stohlberg officiating. Friends may call noon until time of service at the Church. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Dick's memory to UMPI's Scholarship Foundation, Martha & Mary's Kitchen Food Pantry or Presque Isle Animal Shelter or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
