Ret. Msgt. James's Story
DEXTER - Retired Msgt. James A. Knowles USAF, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed peacefully surrounded by family on May 28, 2014. Mr. Knowles was born March 30, 1933, in Corinna, to John and Myrtle Pauline (Seavey) Knowles.
He attended Dexter schools and joined the United States Air Force in 1951 as a Vehicle Maintenance Technician. He served around the world and was a Vietnam veteran. He was awarded 3 accommodation medals for his outstanding service. Upon his retirement in 1971 he moved back home to Dexter. He was employed at the Hartley's dealership from 1971 to 1995. In 1988 he built Jim and Jackie's beloved log home on the Knowles family farm. He spent his days tinkering, cruising on his party boat with his wife, his daily coffee routine with a kiss, taking care of his garden and cutting wood for the winter. He was a past master of the Penobscot Lodge Masons in Dexter and attended the Dexter Community Christian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jacqueline Anita (Hamilton) Knowles; his sons, Richard Knowles, David Knowles and wife, Roxanne Knowles; grandchildren, Adam, Renee, Stephen, Kira and Kevin Knowles; and his special brother and sister-in-law, Wayne & Loraine Hamilton.
A graveside burial service with military honors will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7th, at the Corinna Center Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Herring officiating. A Masonic committal service will also be celebrated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Hospitality of Maine, the Sarah Robinson Fund, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402.
