- Rebecca A. Austyn Rose VanWormer, 43, of East Millinocket, ME died peacefully at home on January 5, 2017 with her loving husband, mother, and dogs by her side after a 4-1/2 year battle with cancer. She was born August 6, 1973, in Millinocket, ME, to John F. and Dorothy (Willette) Roach of East Millinocket.
She graduated from Schenck High School and received degrees from Casco Bay College and the University of Phoenix. She worked most of her career in the insurance industry, first for Acadia Insurance and later Travelers. She was a resident of Portland, ME, for 10 years then relocated to Syracuse, NY ,for another 10 years. She married Kenneth J. VanWormer on April 20, 2012, and shortly after they moved back to her hometown of East Millinocket. Her dream of opening her own dog grooming studio was short-lived when she found out her breast cancer had spread throughout her body.
Becky was an avid singer with an amazing voice, both in local bands and through karaoke. She was a member of three bands while living in Syracuse; Street Corner, Brass Inc, and Valyd Threat. Aside from her love of singing, she enjoyed playing volleyball and ballroom dancing, watching Patriots football,and dogs. Knowing how precious and short life is, she crossed nearly all of her bucket list items off while she still could, including skydiving, hang gliding, and visiting Ireland and Washington, DC. She was a shining light in many lives, bringing her dying wish of an old-fashioned Christmas back to her hometown area to fruition shortly before her passing.
Becky was predeceased by her father, John F. Roach. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth J. VanWormer of East Millinocket (formerly of Mannsville and Syracuse, NY); mother, Dorothy Roach, also of East Millinocket; siblings, Martin and Debra (Saucier) Roach of Gorham, ME, Karen Roach of Haverhill, MA, Brian Roach of Surrey, ME, William Roach of Saco, ME, and Sonya (Roach) and John OMalley of Westbrook, ME; her two dogs, Buster and Kal-El; two stepchildren, Connor and Jordyn VanWormer; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Following her wishes, there will be no funeral services. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
