Raymond's Story

FARMINGDALE - Raymond L. Bond Jr., 90, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2014 at the Hospice House in Auburn while attended by family. He was born in Boston, Mass., on 12/7/1923, the son of Raymond Sr. and Pearl (Larrabee) Bond.

He married Ruth Mary Fitch on July 17, 1944; together they raised six sons and two daughters. Ray was in the army during World War II from 1943-1945 in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He served in several units and assignments, edited unit newsletters and was on the editorial staff of the Germany edition of the Stars and Stripes. He was discharged from the army as a Tech-5. He later joined the US Army Reserve, was commissioned, and served in a variety of command and staff positions at company and battalion levels. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1966.

Raymond graduated from Needham, Mass. High School and received a degree in Journalism from Boston University. He attended Bates College, Newark College of Engineering, Shrivenham American University, and the University of Maine at Augusta.

He worked variously in commercial printing and on editorial staffs of newspapers, for Central Maine Power Co., as proprietor of a management consulting service, for the Maine Law Enforcement Planning and Assistance Agency, for the Internal Revenue Service, as an auctioneer, and as dealer and appraiser of art and antiques.

Raymond was a 59-year mason, a member of Riverside Lodge, No. 135, of Jefferson; an affiliate member and past master of Asylum Lodge, No. 133, of Leeds; a charter member and past master of the Maine Lodge of Research; past grand king of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Maine and at one time its representative to the Grand Chapter of Greece; past high priest of Cushnoc Chapter, No. 43, R.A.M., of Augusta; past Illustrious Master of Alpha Council, No. 3., R&S.M., of Hallowell; and a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite. He served for a time as representative of the Grand Lodge of Maine to the Grand Lodge of Denmark.

He was predeceased by Ruth Mary, as well as their son, Daniel. Ray is survived by his son, Jeff, his wife, Denise and their son, Michael and daughter, Sara; Dan's wife, Crystal and their sons, Justin, Jared and Christopher; son, Duncan and his wife, Muriel Cushing; son, Thomas, former wife Leanne and their son, Tucker; daughter, Laurie Denis, her husband, Craig and their daughters, Angela and Andrea; daughter, Lucy and her partner, Chuck McLaughlin; son, Peter, his wife, Laurie and their son, Jesse; son, Steven; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 12-1 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, at Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, followed by a celebration of Ray's life at 1 p.m. and a private burial service at Fairview Cemetery, Jefferson, Maine.
