Ralph's Story

ORIENT - Ralph E. Tozier died on October 17, 2014, in Rockville Centre, NY, after a long illness. He was born on March 21, 1931, the son of Ralph and Bess (Lindsay) Tozier, Sr., of Houlton, ME.

Ralph was born in Houlton and attended Houlton High School, class of 1949, where he met his wife, the former Jean Roach. He attended Dartmouth College on an ROTC scholarship, graduating in 1953, and was a member of the Alpha Theta fraternity there. Ralph and Jean were married after his graduation from Dartmouth, and Ralph served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Newport, RI.

After his term of service with the Navy was over, Ralph began a career with General Electric in Schenectady, NY. Their three daughters were born there. Ralph's career then took him and his family all over the United States. After Schenectady, they lived in Milwaukee; Cleveland; Palos Verdes Estates, CA; New Orleans; Baton Rouge, LA; Spokane, WA; Long Valley, NJ; and San Antonio. From 1991 to 1996 Ralph and Jean lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, while Ralph served as a director with an international division of Verizon.

In 1999, Ralph and Jean retired to the area they both always called home, settling on East Grand Lake in Orient, ME. Throughout his life Ralph was an avid sailor and traveler, priding himself on having visited every state and continent. He was also passionate about hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, his beloved dogs, and all things Dartmouth.

His daughters Meg McDonald of Garden City, NY; Melissa Tozier of Stevens Point, WI; Anne Teleisha of Hempstead, NY; and seven grandchildren survive Ralph. His wife Jean and his brother, Richard, predeceased him. A memorial service honoring Ralph will be held in Houlton sometime during the summer of 2015.
