Ralph's Story

BLUE HILL - Ralph E. Slaven Sr., 72, passed away peacefully March 14, 2014, surrounded by family. He was born April 12, 1941, in Greenwich, Conn., to Ellis Albert and Mary (Tobin) Slaven.

Once a Marine, always a Marine, he proudly served our country from 1958 to 1962. After his service, he returned to Blue Hill where he married Ernestine in 1963 and raised his family. Ralph was a hard worker, holding many different jobs and often working double shifts from the time he was a teenager until his retirement from Maine Maritime Academy. Throughout his life he had a great appreciation for his animals, including his "Varmit" who converted him to be a cat lover in his last years, his music, and his classic cars. Ralph enjoyed many treasured years in East Blue Hill with family and friends. Above all, he was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Ernestine; children and partners, Deborah, Teresa, Ralph and Kim, Tobin and Martina, Harley and Kelly; and grandchildren, Joelle, Torey, Ján, Chantal, Duke, Giovanna, and Divya. He had many devoted friends who came each week, lightening his last days. He was predeceased in 1998 by his brother, John Knowles Slaven.

The family extends their gratitude to friend and caregiver Mary for her personal and steadfast care during his final year.

A celebration of life service will be held this summer for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ralph's memory may be made to Peninsula Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 834, Blue Hill, ME 04614; and Hancock County Home Care & Hospice, P.O. Box 156, ME Blue Hill 04614, who served in his time of need. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 141 South St., Blue Hill.
