- Ralph E. 'Sonny' Gross, Jr. completed the last and most arduous leg of his journey from this life into the eternal life his faith in God promised him on Monday, March 13, 2017, with his beloved wife and daughter at his side.
It was a mostly joy-filled journey that began on April 9, 1939, in Castine, the day he was born to Ralph E. Gross, Sr. and Marie Babbidge Gross. He graduated valedictorian of his class at George Stevens Academy in 1957, with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering in 1961 and a Master's Degree in Pulp and Paper Technology from the University of Maine in 1962.
He married Lois Gray Gross, the love of his life, on February 12, 1960. Fifty-seven years of happy marriage and family life ensued.
Ralph worked in the paper industry for 32 years, at the mills in Woodland, Millinocket, and East Millinocket, as first an engineer and later a production manager - one with great integrity and compassion for the people with whom he worked. Upon his retirement, he worked as a truck driver with his brother, returning to work that he loved and learned at his father's hand.
Ralph is survived by his adored and adoring wife Lois; his beloved and loving children Eleanor and Mark Collinsworth of Bath, NY, Steven and Julie (Glidden) Gross of East Millinocket, ME, and Carolyn Gross and Vinan Meas, of Limerick, ME; his cherished and adoring grandchildren Katrina Mercer, Taylor Gross and Steven Batchelder, Hayley (Gross) and Christopher Lancaster, and Juliet Meas; great-grandchildren Bradley and Colton Lancaster; dear brothers and sisters-in-law Richard and Yvonne Gross, and James and Jean Gross; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and countless friends of all ages.
The family greatly appreciates his devoted caregivers from Loving Touch In-Home Care and the compassionate hospice nurses from Community Health and Counseling Services.
The family welcomes all to the Penobscot United Methodist Church at 14 Southern Bay Rd. (Rt. 175), for calling hours from 1-2 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017, to be followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 2 p.m.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Ralph's memory to the Alzheimer's Association (383 U.S. Rt. 1, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074) or the Penobscot United Methodist Church Memorial Fund (14 Southern Bay Rd., Penobscot, ME 04476).
Arrangements are under the direction and care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Bucksport. (mitchelltweedie-young.com)
