ELLSWORTH - Rae Ellen Rogers, founder and owner of the Penobscot Valley School of Gymnastics in Bangor and wife of the late Edwin Blair Rogers, passed away May 10 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Portland after a 23-year battle with autoimmune disease. Rae was born September 15 1942 in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Harvard "Diggie" and Arlene (Gott) Wilbur, and grew up in Waltham.
She attended Waltham and Eastbrook Grammar Schools and Ellsworth High School, class of 1960.
Rae opened the Penobscot Valley School of Gymnastics in Bangor in 1979, converting a garage on Hammond Street. As school membership increased, she moved the school to larger facilities in Bangor. Today, the school is located off the Odland Road, and enrolls over 400 students.
In 1983, the school joined the state YMCA gymnastics league as the Bangor representative. Rae served as league coordinator and in many other positions in the league. This April, the state YMCA gymnastics meet in Lewiston was dedicated to Rae, and she was honored for her dedication and contributions to gymnastics education in Maine.
She is survived by sons, Cliff Rogers of Ellsworth, Ken Rogers and his wife Debbie of Solon Ohio, and her daughter Karen Proctor and her husband Rick of Falmouth; five grandchildren, Jacob and Adam Rogers of Solon Ohio, and Courtney, Drew, and Caroline Proctor of Falmouth; two sisters, Patsy Jordan and her husband Marshall of Waltham, and Juanita Calfa and her husband Sal of Colorado Springs Colorado; her companion, Dale Jordan of Eastbrook; Ed Weirick of Orland; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and parents.
Visitation hours will be 5:30 to 7 PM on Wednesday May 13 at the Jordan-Fernald 113 Franklin St. in Ellsworth. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday May 14 at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Ellsworth. Family and friends are invited to fellowship after the interment; time and location of the fellowship will be announced prior to the funeral.
