CHERRYFIELD - Preston Edward Smith passed away on August 27, 2015 a few days shy of his 90th birthday. He was born on September 2, 1925 in Unionville, Me., the son of Roy G. and Josie (Ames) Smith.
He moved with his family to Cherryfield as a small child and lived there most of his life. He attended schools in Cherryfield and Cherryfield Academy. As a young man he worked with his father in the family trucking business. He retired from SAD #37 after many years as a school bus driver and their Transportation Coordinator. He served several years as a Washington Cty. Commissioner. As an avid outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed fishing and ran a snowmobile business for several years. He was a founding member of the Narraguagus Snowmobile Club.
Mr. Smith was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force and a more than 50 year member of American Legion Post #8.
He is survived by his daughter, Sherry Smith and grandson, Chris Brigham of Ellsworth Falls; a niece, Ellen Tenan and husband, Neil of Cherryfield; niece, Barbara McHatton and husband, John of Valrico, FL; nephew, Paul McManus and wife Pam of Eddington and his loyal companion, Hazel Anderson and her family of Cherryfield. He is also survived by numerous grand-nieces and nephews. He leaves many other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Frances Smith McManus and her husband, Tam; his brother, Charles E. Smith and his wife, Arlene; niece, Faye McManus Lunt; and nephew, Linwood McManus.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Smith will be held on Sunday, September 20th at 2 o'clock, at Harrington Baptist Church, 1 Forest Hill St., Harrington, Maine.
