Philip's Story

Newburgh - Philip S. Young, 96, of Newburgh, ME, beloved husband of Charlotte Young, died peacefully in the comfort of his home on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Born on May 15, 1920, in Gorham, ME, son of the late Walter and Edna (Kimball) Young, he had lived in Newburgh, ME the past 35 years.
At a young age, along with his father and siblings, he tended to the family dairy farm. During the war years, after graduating from the University of Maine in 1940, he returned to the family farm. He married the love of his life in 1945. In 1949, he left the family farm to work for Shaw's Ridge Dairy in Springvale, ME. In 1961, he moved his family to Orono, ME, accepting the position of Herd Supervisor at the University of Maine Department of Agriculture, a position he held until his retirement. His family felt incredibly loved by Philip who honored the uniqueness of each and every one of them. The manner in which he lived each day of his life has been an inspiration and positive role model for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a faithful friend to many and always offered an open heart, helping hand and listening ear. Spending many hours spring to fall in his well-cared for gardens and rainy days in his workshop, brought him great joy and a fulfilling life. He often could be found browsing through seed catalogs or revising plans for building yet another bird house or feeder. Philip was a Veteran Life Member of The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was honored to receive his Seventy Year Jewel in 2013. At the time of his death he was serving as Secretary of the Monroe Lodge #136, an office he had held since 2003. For seventy nine years Philip was a Maine State Grange member.
In addition to his wife, Charlotte, of seventy-one wonderful years, he leaves four children, Ann Baldwin and her husband, John of South Windsor, CT, James Young and his wife, Fiona of Ellsworth, ME, Bethany Young of Newburgh, ME and Reginald Young and his wife, Phyllis of Ellsworth, ME; a sister, Barbara Moulton of Buxton, ME; a brother, Lawrence Young and his wife, Sylvia of Buxton, ME; four grandchildren, Jennifer Guibord and her husband, Garth of Portland, OR, Emily Nelson and her husband, Patrick of Bath, ME, Jeffrey Baldwin and his wife, Melanie of New York, NY and David Baldwin of Willimantic, CT; four cherished great-grandchildren, Dexter and Emmett Guibord and Harper and Andie Nelson.
Family and friends will gather at a later date for a tribute to and celebration of Philip's life. Memorial donations in Philip's honor may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 360 Broadway, PO Box 403, Bangor, ME 04402-0403.
