Philip's Story

MARS HILL - Philip Eugene Lawrence, 92, slipped into eternity on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.  He was born November 5, 1922, to James and Ellen (Smith) Lawrence.

He lived an event filled life.  He was full of humor and had a giving heart.  He served with the U.S. Army during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star.  After returning home he attended Fort Kent Teachers College and he taught school in Presque Isle for a number of years before coming to Mars Hill to teach for 35 years.  After retirement he spent many years enjoying "the quiet life." He enjoyed sports, especially a good game of golf.  He was a member of the American Legion William Cousins Post 118, where he was a commander for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beryl (Sturgis) Lawrence of Mars Hill; four children, Susan Rideout, Rodney and Molly Lawrence, Warren and Elaine Lawrence, and Barbara and Richard Friscia; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald and Gerald; and a sister, "Peggy" Smith.

There will be no calling hours at Phil's request. A memorial service will be held later in the spring. Arrangements are by Faye Funeral Home, Presque Isle.  To leave an online condolence, please visit

Through this toilsome world alas!  Once and only once I pass; If a kindness I may show, If a good deed I may do to a suffering fellow man, Let me do it while I can, no delay, for it is plain, I shall not pass this way again.
