Philip's Story

ORRINGTON - Philip Bradford Eckert, 79, passed away July 3, 2015. Phil was born August 7, 1935 in Glenburn, the son of John and Bertha (Bradford) Eckert.

Phil attended Glenburn schools and graduated from Bangor High School in 1953. He was married to Marguerite E. Bowden on September 11, 1953. After graduation, he joined the US Marine Corps, serving from 1953-56, which included a Korean tour. Phil and Marguerite were owners of "Eckert's Variety" in Orrington from 1968-74, and he worked for Canteen Service in Bangor until his retirement. Since retiring, Phil's favorite pastime was being home on King's Mountain and taking his Golden Retriever for Jeep rides. He was a member of the Kenduskeag Lodge #137 A.F. & A.M. and Anah Shriners. He was a current member of the Burton-Goode-Sargent Chapter 1 of the Korean War Veterans, Maurice W. Miles VFW Post # 4527 of Orrington and the Marine Corp League, Greater Bangor Area Det. #1152.

In addition to his parents, Phil was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite; sisters, Helen, Carmie and Blanche; brothers, Donald and David; son-in-law, Andrew Frace; and grandchildren, Mara and Brady Frace. He is survived by his children, Pamela Frace of Orono, Larry Eckert of Orrington, Lori Garcia and husband, Mel of Kaneohe, HI, and Tammi Bowden of Trenton; his grandchildren, Evan Frace and wife, Rachel, Nathan Frace, Lucas Frace, Robert Eckert, Sam Louise Eckert, Samuel Garcia and wife, Ella, Benjamin Garcia, Alison Punohu and husband, Kaipo, Matthew Bowden and wife, Crystal, Jesse Bowden, and Daniel Bowden and wife, Casey; as well as 16 great grandchildren; sister, Doris Clement of Ocean Park; sisters-in-law, Wilma Eckert of Milo and Esther Bowden of Bucksport; brother and sister-in-law, Wilfred "Bud" and Doris Bowden of Kenduskeag.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 10 a.m, Friday, July 10, 2015, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. A time of stories and continued celebration will be held in the Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, following the service.
