Peter's Story

Text size

Cumberland - Peter S. Hayes, 64, of Cumberland, died on April 13, 2017. He was born on Jan. 10, 1953, in Auburn, Massachusetts, to Peter S. Hayes and Arleen (Badger) Hayes.
Peter grew up in Auburn, Massachusetts. After high school, Peter served in the U.S. Navy for six years, and honorably discharged in 1978. Peter went on to attend the University of Massachusetts, where he met his wife, Wendy. They married in 1983.
Pete's love of the outdoors led him to Maine in 1984, spending four years as an FM design engineer at Howell Laboratories in Bridgton. Pete held various engineering and software design jobs throughout his life, but his true passion was for knowledge and the environment.
His passion for knowledge led him to an M.S. in environmental studies from Antioch New England Graduate School, an M.S. in economics from the University of New Hampshire, and he was a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maine. Pete was happiest when he had the opportunity to share his passion and vast knowledge of ecosystems, whether it was working as an adjunct at local colleges, participating in projects at Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, or leading canoe tours with the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center.
Pete enjoyed walking in the woods with his family and dogs. He also enjoyed camping, especially along the coast, and found true joy in immersing himself in the beauty of the ocean and wildlife through kayaking with his wife.
Pete is survived by his wife Wendy (Hartstone) Hayes, of Cumberland; and his sons, Michael and Daniel. Pete was preceded in death by his mother, Arleen Hayes, in 1999; and his father, Peter S. Hayes, who died in the Korean War in 1953.
A remembrance celebration and potluck dinner will be held April 29, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth.
In lieu of flowers, the family, requests memorial donations, be made to, Friends of Scarborough Marsh, or Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center.
