- Patrick F. McDonough, 88, died December 17, 2016 in Brewer, Maine. He was born Feb. 12, 1928 in Portland, the son of Daniel and Mary (King) McDonough. Patrick was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is best known for his generosity, compassion for others, and his quick wit. He was a consummate flirt and a fun-loving Irishman, often heard singing or whistling Irish tunes. He was proud of his Irish heritage and kept in close contact with relatives who reside in Ireland, having visited them on two separate occasions. Patrick graduated from Cheverus High School in Portland in 1946. After his graduation, he joined the Army and was stationed in Japan. He married the love of his life, Vivian, in 1954 and resided on both Vinalhaven and North Haven islands respectively while employed by the Maine State Department of Transportation Ferry Service for 30 years, in the capacity of Able-Bodied Seaman. After the death of his wife in 2000, Patrick volunteered at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor for 15 years and received the Mother Angela Award for his dedication and service. He considered his time spent there both an honor and a privilege, and often referred to his fellow volunteers as his "second family."
Surviving are two children, Ellen M. Brochu and her husband, Joseph of Orrington, and Patrick M. McDonough and his wife, Lisa of Bowdoinham; two grandchildren, Patrick J. Brochu of Ellsworth and Ryan Brochu of Orrington. Patrick was predeceased by his wife, Vivian (Hatch) McDonough and by his beloved sister, Mary. The family would like to thank all who provided friendship, companionship, love, and spiritual guidance over the last several months. Your kindness and support has been greatly appreciated.
