Patricia's Story

WINTHROP - Patricia Marie Ramsdell West, 92, died Monday, August 11, 2014 at her home with her husband by her side.Patricia was born September 22, 1921 in Bangor, Maine the daughter of Fred and Louise (Lemlin) Ramsdell.

Pat attended the University of Maine Orono and graduated from Husson College. She was employed by UMO and St Josephs Hospital in Bangor.

In October 1943 she married Lt. Clifford (Bruz) H. West Jr. USMCR in Quantico Virginia. For the next few months they lived in Quantico VA, Encinitas CA, and Escondido CA. When Bruz was shipped to the South Pacific during WWII she returned to the Bangor area to work until 1946 when Bruz returned. Pat and Cliff settled in South Portland and she managed the office of Phillip Yerxa Oil Co. In August 1950 Bruz was recalled to active duty and they moved to several locations over the next 20 years. Pat and Cliff had four children, all girls; Nancy, Patsy, Becky and Margie. For the next two decades Pat did what Marine Corp wives do best, she caringly ran the household for the family in such places as Springfield and Arlington VA, New Orleans LA, 29 Palms CA and Kansas City MO. She raised her daughters to be strong independent women. She invested time and energy into many charitable interests. No matter the location, Pat always managed to develop long lasting friendships. She was active in church and community affairs in whatever location they were stationed and in 1968 they retired to Winthrop.

For the next 30 years she was active with the Winthrop United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army, Maine General Hospital Volunteers, Winthrop Grade School Read Aloud Program, was a Trustee at Charles M. Bailey Public Library, and other civic activities.

Pat and Bruz enjoyed many interesting trips with friends and family, traveling extensively on land and sea. Cards and games with family and friends were among Pat's favorite activities and the games offered a glimpse into her quiet, competitive side. Playing duplicate bridge well into her nineties and always enjoying time with her friends and family playing "Pay Me", "Cribbage", "Yahtzee", or "Michigan Rummy", she liked to win and usually did. An avid reader, Pat always had a book or two going and circulated them constantly.

Pat fought long and hard against arthritis. As she wished, she remained at her home of forty-six years to the very end, her loving family and especially her husband of seventy-one years, attending to her every need.

Sisters Eleanor Porter and Anita Thayer, brothers Charles Ramsdell and Frank Ramsdell, and son-in-law David M. Dick all preceded Pat in death.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Cliff, and four daughters, Nancy West and husband Ronald Rich, Patricia Ann West, Rebecca West Dick and partner Charlie Humphries, and Marjorie Evans and husband Kyle, and 5 grandchildren, Adam Foyt and partner Alisha Hartung, Jason and Alanna Dick, Tyler Evans and wife Kristen, and Rees Evans; sister in law, Anne Ramsdell, brother in law, Robert Thayer, and several nieces and nephews.
