VENICE - Patricia Kathleen (Kinney) Knowles, age 70, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, September 11, 2014 after a valiant two year battle with cancer. Patty was born on March 30, 1944 in Wheeling, WV, the daughter of the late Crawford D. and Kathleen C. Kinney.
She graduated from John Bapst High School in Bangor, ME and the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston. During High school, she was a life guard and had a brief stint as the weather girl at WLBZ in Bangor.
After college, Patty moved to Rochester, NY where she worked for Security Trust Co. and volunteered at Strong Memorial Hospital. From there she moved to Chicago, IL where she did modeling work for The Carson, Pirie and Scott company and volunteer work at Children's Memorial Hospital.
In 1967, she returned to Maine and married Frederick I. Knowles, Jr., a union that produced her two beloved children. The family moved to Machias where she was the Vice President of the Machias Valley Women's Club as well as a volunteer swim instructor. Many of her closest and dearest friends were made in the Machias area, all of whom she kept in close contact with throughout the years.
1973 brought the family to Augusta, where Patty lived until her retirement. She began her career in Augusta as the Secretary to the President of Casco Northern Bank. Subsequently being promoted to Asst. Manager, then Branch Manager. In 1987 Patty went to work for the US Small Business Administration as an Economic Development Specialist, where she remained until her retirement in 2009. Retirement brought Patty to Venice FL, where she resided until her passing.
During her banking years, she was a member of the National Assoc. of Bank Women, American Institute of Banking, Board of Governors for Kennebec Valley Multiple Sclerosis Volunteer Council and the Kennebec Valley Board of Realtors. Patty was also a long time member of the Augusta Country Club.
Patty was pre-deceased by both parents as well as her brother, Crawford "Skip" Kinney.
She is survived by her son, Chip Knowles and his children Matthew and Annie of Portland, ME; her daughter, Amy Knowles Barriero, her husband Brian and her children Dylan and Lauren of Norfolk, MA and a brother, Robert Kinney and his wife Betta of Norfolk, MA.
Our family gives a special thanks to Patty's best friend and confidant, Bob McCarty, whom she met three years ago on a blind date. His devotion to our Mother during her final journey will never be forgotten.
Patty loved a good party, so in lieu of a funeral, a gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, September 19th from 3-5 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Augusta Country Club, 19 Hammonds Grove, Manchester.
A private burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Bangor at a later date.
