Noreen's Story

BREWER & BANGOR - Noreen J. (McCarthy) Ireland, 71, died Nov. 11, 2014 at a Bangor hospital. She was born Nov. 5, 1943 in Brewer, the daughter of Deveraux and Nora (McDonald) McCarthy.

Noreen worked for many years for Merrill Bank and Bangor Federal Credit Union until a brain aneurysm and stroke kept her from returning to work. She never had an unkind word, she was known for her singing, bright smile, positive attitude and always had a kind heart for everyone in addition to her smile. She was also a devoted Red Sox fan. Noreen, or Gram as she was known to her family and friends, adored many people in her life too numerous to name and she absolutely loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren more than anything. She resided at Stillwater healthcare for the past few years where she loved everyone. Her family gratefully thanks the staff and friends that she had met there for their kindness and care.

Surviving are two children, Colleen Gordon and her husband, Jeff, whom she referred to as her "best good guy friend" and Eric Ireland and his wife, Lindy of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, Christy Merrithew of Brewer, Kyle Morin of Brewer, Cady Gordon of Brewer, Kaitlin and Evan Ireland both of California; great grandchildren, Hunter and Chase Merrithew, Austin and Skylar Rice all of Brewer; two brothers, Kevin McCarthy of Arizona and Michael McCarthy of Oregon; one sister, Mary-Ellen McCarthy Young of Colorado; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends may visit 5 - 7 PM Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer where a service honoring her life will be held 11 AM Tuesday. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stillwater Healthcare, Activities Fund, 335 Stillwater Ave., Bangor, ME 04401 or to Brewer Youth Sports, 96 Grove St., Brewer, ME 04412.
