Neil's Story

CORINTH - Neil Lewis Merrill, 70, passed away peacefully on June 25th, 2014, surrounded by his loving wife and daughters, after a courageous battle with lung disease. He was born on May 6, 1944, the son of Lewis and Christina Merrill (Goodwin) of Stetson.

Neil will be remembered as a quiet and caring and gentle man, but most of all a loving husband, father and Papa, to his girls. His greatest joy in his life was his time with his family. He cherished his daughters, and his granddaughters were the light of his life. He was there at each sport and school activity with such pride and love when he saw them at a play, game or a musical. Summer picnics, ice-creams at Bucksport and adventure rides, made each day, a day to remember, as along as his girls were with him.

Neil graduated from East Corinth Academy, and was a dedicated and proud worker for the Maine Department of Transportation, for 37 years, retiring in 2000, as an interstate foreman.

Neil is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Elaine; two devoted daughters, Julie and her husband, Stephen Sudsbury and Debbie and her husband, Mark Aptt; two cherished granddaughters that were his world, Chelsey and Gracie Aptt; four sisters, Ann Drew, Cheryl Pelkey, Marilyn Merrill, and Linda Westcott. A special mother-in-law and father-in-law, Elden and Shirley Clark; brothers-in-law, Kenny and wife, Gail Clark, and Buddy Clark; several special nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Neil was predeceased by a brother, Wayne; a very special sister, Joan; brothers-in-law, John Drew and Richard Wescott.

Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Monday, June 30, 2014, at Brookings-Smith 133 Center St., Bangor. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 12:00 noon Monday until time of service. Interment will be held in the Corinthian Cemetery, Corinth. Condolence to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com
