HIGH SPRINGS, FLORIDA - Murray Howard Sweetser, 84, formerly of Portland, Bangor & Brewer passed away peacefully at his home in Florida on November 4th, 2014. He was born in Portland on May 6th, 1930, the son of Harry P. & Florence Smith Sweetser.
He graduated from The Greely Institute in 1948 &
He went on to earn a degree in mathematics from the University of Maine. He married Suzanne E. Goodwin in 1963 while working for Casco Bay Trading Post. He would later work as a Supply Quality engineer at Sanders Associates in South Portland and landed his dream job at a young company called Nautel, ME in 1975. While working as the General Manager and later Vice President, his employees called him Uncle Murray for his mentoring demeanor and approach to his role as their manager. He worked at Nautel, ME until his retirement in 1997 when he moved to High Springs. He worked as a volunteer at the University of Florida (Go Gators!) in the extension office as a master gardener. On his property he planted a wide variety of plants to draw in the birds and butterflies he wished to see every day as he sat out in the warm Florida sun. Murray was a kind and generous man all the days of his life. He was highly educated in many subjects and spoke 6 languages.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Marston and Douglas, his sister, Virginia Sweetser Merrill. He is survived by his son, Frederick M. Sweetser and wife, Suzanne of South Portland, 3 stepchildren - Chris, Clayton & Karen Van Ness, 8 grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren.
There will be a private graveside burial at Moss side cemetery in Cumberland.
