Murray's Story

VERONA ISLAND - Murray A. Chatto, 93, died peacefully, September 20, at a Bangor Hospital. He was born June 17, 1922, in the Town of Penobscot, son of Ernest and Kathleen (Grindle) Chatto.

Murray was a 1940 graduate of Bucksport High School, a veteran of WWII serving in the US Coast Guard during the Pacific and European Theaters, an employee of South Portland Shipyard and a retiree from Champion International Paper Co. formerly known as St. Regis Paper Co. after forty-two years of service. Following retirement, he worked for many years for Heritage Tackle and Gear. He was a member of the Verona American Legion, Masons and the Franklin Street Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed doing so with the gang made up of family and close friends. Murray and his wife enjoyed the adventures of traveling by themselves, with the gang and in later years accompanying family members.

Murray is survived by daughters, Loretta J. Watt and husband, Gerald, and Jacqueline M. Oliver and husband, Owen, all of Verona Island; grandchildren, Daniel Watt and husband, James Britton of Orland, Nanette Smith and husband, Stephen, of Litchfield, Lillian Walker and husband, Hazen, of Verona Island, Michelle Astbury and husband, Wyatt, of Orland, and Jason Oliver and wife, Kris, of Sanford; great grandchildren, Jesicca Adams and fiancée, Owen, of Searsport, Christopher Warford and partner, Nicole, of Carmel, Kathryn and John Smith of Litchfield, Clayton and Samuel Doolan of Orland, Melissa Palumbo and husband, Michael, of Biddeford, Jamie Britton of Brewer, Garrett Walker and partner, Morgan, of Masardis, Christopher Walker and partner, Mackenzie, of Portage; great-great grandchildren, Dominic Adams of Searsport, Isabella Warford of Carmel and Elizabeth Walker of Portage; brothers-in-law, Lloyd E. Turner and wife Gloria, of East Orland, and Robert Brawn of Searsport; nieces, Lee Ann, Vicki, Debbie, Rosemary, Colleen and Cathy; and nephews, Lloyd, Jr., Robert, Jr., and Ernest.

Murray was predeceased by his wife of seventy-one years, Maxine; his parents; sisters, Muriel and husband Shirley, Vivian, Gladys and husband, Robert; grandson-in-law, Clifford Doolan; great grandchildren, Anna Smith and Brandon Astbury; brother-in-law, George E. Turner and wife, Eileen; nephews George E. Turner, Jr. and Dean Boyce.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the Riverview Cemetery, North Bucksport with Pastor Peter Remick officiating, with Masonic and Military ceremonial participation. A time of remembrance will be held at the Verona Town Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Murrays name may be made to a charity of your choice.
