After high school graduation Muriel went into nursing school at Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago and graduated in 1942. In February 1943 she joined the Army Nurses Corps and was stationed at the 220th Station Hospital at Fort Jackson, S.C. In July she traveled by troop train across the country to San Bernadina, CA where she met Clyde, who was also in the Army.
On May 12, 1944 Clyde and Muriel were married in Wisconsin at Muriel's home church. Shortly after their marriage their unit broke up and they were separated for 21 months. The nurses joined the 228th General Hospital and were sent to England. The European War was over in May 1945 and Muriel returned home in November 1945. She was discharged from the Army in Jan. 1946 with the rank of 1st Lt. She and Clyde came to Baring, ME on March 19, 1946 where they lived together for 57 1/2 years.
