TOPSHAM - Morton E. Hamlin, born July 2, 1934, died peacefully Saturday, March 8, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his devoted wife of 58 years, Diane (Robbins) Hamlin; three sons, Edward Hamlin of Leominster, Mass., Thomas Hamlin and his wife, Vikki, of Durango, Colo., and Steven Hamlin and his wife, Sandra Haller, of Wiscasset; one daughter, Debra Huntoon Reeder and her fiancé, Will Curtis; and five grandchildren, Christopher Huntoon, Anthony Hamlin, Piper Compton, Nick Hamlin, and Sobei Hamlin. He also leaves a sister, Nancy Ehrlenbach and her husband, Richard, of Ellsworth; two sisters-in-law, Sandra Hamlin of Brownville, and Darla Hamlin of North Yarmouth; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Dwight R. Hamlin, and Ronald A. Hamlin.
He was born in Milo, graduated Milo High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees from the University of Maine in Orono. He was a teacher, school principal and Superintendent of Schools in several school districts before retiring to enjoy life in Arizona for the winter months and Maine for the summer months.
Morton was an avid golfer, shooting his age three times in 2012, and enjoyed family, sailing, camping and gardening. He also enjoyed his volunteer work at Mid Coast Hospital as well as the time and effort he contributed to other community organizations including the Elks Club and Shrine.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Benton and his staff at Maine Center for Cancer Medicine as well as the staff at Chans homehealthcare for the attention and care that Morton received though out his illness. The family also wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, concerns and well wishes though out his illness.
At Morton's wishes, no services are scheduled. Burial will be private for family members. There will be a gathering for a celebration of Morton's life which will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a cancer research organization of your choice or to the Morton E. Hamlin Scholarship Fund at Greely High School in Cumberland Center, Maine.
