Mitchell's Story

DIXMONT - Mitchell A. Sowa Sr., 96, died peacefully Sept. 23, 2014 at the Maine Veteran Home in Bangor. He was born in East Chicago, Ind., March 1, 1918, the son of Michael and Antonnette (Skiba) Sowa.

He was educated in Chicago schools. Mitchell was a WWII Army veteran. He served in Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Mitchell was married to Irene C (Wasielewski) Sowa who predeceased him on Sept. 13, 1975. He worked as a building maintenance supervisor in Chicago for many years.

He is survived by two sons; Mitchell A. Sowa Jr. of Dixmont and Alan Z. Sowa and his wife, Carol of Dixmont, who he resided with for 14 years before he entered the Maine Veterans Home; two sisters, Jeanette Duggan of Chicago, Mary Bowman of Tinley Park, Ill, 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A special thank you for the care his granddaughter, Carolyn gave him over many years.

Mitchell attended St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans of Chicago, and a member of the American Legion in Dixmont.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, 2014 at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High Street, Newport. Private family services will be conducted at a later date in Chicago.
