Millard's Story

JONESPORT - Millard "Sammy" Philmore Crowley, Jr., 89, passed away September 5, 2015 at Machias. He was born on Jan 16, 1926 in West Enfield Maine, the son of Millard Philmore Crowley, Sr. and Agnes M. (Grant) Crowley.

He attended Joneport schools and graduated from High School in 1943. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and began active duty March 23rd 1944 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Arena. He was honorably discharged as a Quartermaster Second Class at New Orleans, LA on the 20th of June 1946. He returned to Jonesport after his military service where met and married Ruth Patricia Church on September 8th of 1946 and began his career as a lobster fisherman. In 1963 he became the Postmaster of the Jonesport Post Office, a position he held until he retired and returned to lobster fishing, which he truly enjoyed. Hobbies included fishing, duck hunting, swimming, camping, walking, running, dancing, tending his gardens at Kelley's Point and enjoying his cottage on Gardner's Lake with his wife, Ruth. Millard was a member of the American Legion, Rogers-Worcester Post 108, Jonesport, Maine. One of his favorite rituals for many years was jogging from Kelley's Point to the center of town each morning.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruth Patricia Crowley, son-in-law Darrell E. Alley of Jonesport and grandchildren Scott D. Alley and his wife Kelly D. Alley and their children Adrienne G. Alley, and Lucas S. Alley of Livermore, Maine; Taryn L. Finlay and Josh Polk and children Alex Finlay, Jordan Finlay and Derek J. Polk of Machiasport; and Derek R. Alley of Jonesport, son Bruce M. Crowley, and his wife Janet K. Crowley of Jonesport and their daughter Maegan L. Crowley of South Portland; and son Steven P. Crowley and his wife Cathy A. Crowley of Jonesport and their children Toby S. Crowley and his wife Beth Crowley and their son Tyler Crowley of Kailua, HI and Ryan S. Crowley and his wife Danica K. Crowley of Austin, Texas; and a special friend Fred of Machias.

He was predeceased by his father Millard P. Crowley Sr., mother Agnes M. (Grant) Crowley, and daughter Terry L. Alley.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday September 27, 2015 at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport with Rev. Phyllis Merritt officiating.
