Mike O'Connor, 69, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on June 30, 1947, in Pittsfield, the son of the late Patrick and Yvonne (Crowell) O'Connor.
Mike graduated from Maine Central Institute with the class of 1966 and proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the American Legion, Burns W. Knowlton Jr. Post #32.
Family was everything to Mike. He loved being with them and was lovingly called Bampa by his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, dancing and drinking his favorite whiskey, Canadian Club with 7-up. He was the best BBQ cook around and didn't mind grilling for hours at a time.
Mike loved and served his community. He touched countless lives. He was one of the founders of the Ambulance service in Pittsfield and worked as a licensed Advanced Emergency Medical Technician for over 45 years. He was employed by Sebasticook Valley Hospital and responded to over 46,000 ambulance calls. He held the record in the State of Maine for delivering the most babies, 22.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Paula O'Connor of Pittsfield; daughter, Kathy Hook "Kathy Kool" and husband, John, of Plymouth; four grandchildren, Kyle Irish and companion, Alicia Ouellette, of Hermon, Cody Irish and wife, Trish, of Dexter, Ashley Poulin and fiancé, Ben Arsenault, of Corinna and Madison Hook of Plymouth; five great grandchildren, Alexis, Diadem, Autumn, Michael and Mylah; brother, Timothy O'Connor of Winthrop; aunt, Shirley Frost and husband, Roland, of Leeds; several nieces and nephews; and his extended circle of family and friends, including his "special family", the fellow workers at Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
Mike was predeceased by his parents; two sons, Michael Irish and Patrick O'Connor; sister, Sandra Dickinson; brother, Daniel O'Connor; and special uncle, Stanley O'Connor.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2016, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held at noon, Sunday, August 14, at the funeral home with the Rev. Glenn Nichols officiating. Military honors will be presented for his service to our country. A gathering will immediately follow at the Sebasticook Valley Elks Lodge, and all are welcome. A private family committal will take place at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield, at a later date.
