SUTTON, Vt. - Michael Joseph V. Morrow, 61, a son of Maine's St. John Valley, passed away at home March 12, 2014. Michael loved the outdoors and every animal in it. He was a biologist, a chemist, a craftsman, and a philosopher. His strong will was tempered by a superior intellect, reason, and diverse reading. Mike was multi-talented and could figure out and accomplish any number of projects. His will to keep moving despite pain, barriers, or physical decline was remarkable. He was not ready to leave.
The oldest of nine, Mike made up the games, led the play, and supervised the antics. He grew up working hard on the land, and was a serious gardener. Turning the soil and planting the seeds were among his favorite things. He loved to see things grow - all kinds of living things. He loved babies. He was a fine card player, including contract bridge, and a fly fisherman. He believed in public service and participated for his town. He made a difference in how the state manifests its best sustainability efforts.
In 34 years of marriage, there was never a dull year. Mike loved to get things done, create order out of chaos, and sometimes chaos from order. Every year was fresh. Mike was an excellent hugger, and his hugs were warm and generous. In his company, we knew we were safe from all manner of things because he would always put himself out first to shield his family. He never hesitated to do a job that had to be accomplished, even when it was difficult, dirty, or painful.
He leaves his wife, Barbara; their daughter, Rachael; his daughter, Isabelle and her children; his brothers, Kevin and Rodney; sisters, Sandra Vick, Brenda Gagnon, and Wanda Picard; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws on both sides, and Gracie. His mother Anne will particularly feel this loss. Mike was predeceased by his father, Abel; brothers, Carl, Alan, and Melvin; and in-laws, Marion and Raymond Page, who loved him very much.
Donations in Mike's honor would be appreciated for the NEK Audubon Society, care of 1302 Main St., St. Johnsbury, VT, 05819; or to Mizpah, P.O. Box 216, Grand Isle, ME, 04746, www.mizpah.us.
